What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a School Evaluation Report from April 2025. ERO found that a majority of students meet curriculum expectations in reading and maths, but less than half do so in writing, and that boys trail in reading and writing, which the school has made a priority. Students know the school values and have a strong sense of belonging and wellbeing, supported by restorative practices.

A majority attend regularly, and the school is working towards the government’s attendance target. ERO noted collaborative, strategic leadership, a curriculum that increasingly responds to learners’ needs and cultures, te reo Māori and mātauranga Māori woven through learning, with students taking the lead in schoolwide mihi whakatau, and well-monitored support for learners with additional needs.

The agreed next steps are to embed the school’s agreed teaching practices in writing to lift progress and achievement for all learners, especially boys, keep building te reo Māori, tikanga Māori and mātauranga Māori across the school with mana whenua, and work with the community on ways to improve regular attendance.

Enrolling

Students who live in the home zone have the right to enrol, with proof of residence required. Out-of-zone places are offered under the school’s enrolment scheme, with priority for siblings of current and former students, children of former students and children of board employees or members, and by ballot when there are more applicants than places.

Under the scheme, the board publishes the number of out-of-zone places, how to apply and any ballot date in a local newspaper each year.

About a term before a child starts, the school sends a welcome letter with pre-enrolment information and invites the child to its Little LEGENDs transition programme and a set of classroom visits. The enrolment form is completed when the child turns five, and the school keeps a copy of their birth certificate and immunisation record.
