The name Cloverlea originates from the homestead and property developed by David Buick MP from 1881 until his death in 1918. Buick operated a horse stud and farmed sheep and cattle on the land. Following the First World War, the government purchased part of the estate under the Discharged Soldiers’ Settlement Act 1915 and allocated sections to returning servicemen and nurses in 1919. The area became known as the Cloverlea Soldier Settlement, which later shortened to Cloverlea.
Suburban development expanded in later decades. Cloverlea School opened in 1975 to serve the growing residential population. The suburb continues to evolve within Palmerston North’s broader urban framework.
