The Rokaiwhana Stream Walk is a short forest walk from Tamaki Road end in Eastern Ruahine Forest Park, which DOC places 13 km from Dannevirke.
DOC describes it as a pleasant and easy 1-hour forest walk and times it at 2 hours return. Even so, it is classed as an Advanced tramping track, so expect a backcountry track surface rather than a formed path.
The walk passes through low-level forest and makes a compact half-day outing on the eastern side of the Ruahine Range, about 43 km from Palmerston North. When we checked on 18 October 2026, DOC had no alerts for the track, but check DOC before you go and tell someone your plans.

About Rokaiwhana Stream Walk
This is one of the gentler ways to sample the Ruahine Forest Park from the Dannevirke side. DOC’s page keeps it simple: a tramping track through low-level forest, reached from the end of Tamaki Road, that most people walk out and back in about two hours.
The mix of DOC’s descriptions is worth noting. The page calls it a “pleasant and easy” forest walk, but the official grade is Advanced tramping track. So while the outing is short, plan for a tramping track underfoot: sturdy footwear and a bit of backcountry experience help.
It suits walkers with some tramping experience who want a bush outing without committing to a full-day tramp.
Getting There
DOC’s directions from Dannevirke: head north, turn left into Ruahine Street, which becomes Umutaoroa Road after 1.2 km. Carry on for another 5.4 km, then turn left into Top Grass Road.
Tamaki Road is 2.3 km along on the right, and the track starts at the end of Tamaki Road. DOC also has a Tamaki Road map on its track page.
Before You Go
As for any trip into the forest park, DOC’s advice is to choose a trip that matches your skills, check the forecast and pack warm clothes and extra food. Check the forecast and DOC alerts using Plan My Walk, and tell someone your plans before heading into the forest park.
