About A-Frame Hut and Takapari Road Track

From the Tamaki West Road end you park, then follow the signs 200 m to the picnic area where the track begins. Very soon the track turns uphill, and from there it is a sustained climb. DOC describes it rising steeply first through podocarp forest and then through leatherwood.

The climb tops out at Takapari Road, an old bulldozed road. Turn right and follow it for about 100 m to A-Frame Hut. With a one-way time of 2 hours 30 minutes for 3.1 km, this is a short distance with a lot of height gain, so pace yourself on the way up and take care on the descent.

The track suits fit trampers looking for a solid half-day climb from a road end with good facilities, or a first night in a tiny backcountry hut. The simplest return is back down the same track to Tamaki West Road end.

A-Frame Hut

DOC lists A-Frame Hut in its Basic/bivvies category. It has 2 bunk beds with mattresses, heating, a non-flush toilet and tap water that is not treated, so boil it before use. With only two bunks, have a backup plan in case it’s full.

When we checked on 18 October 2026, DOC had an alert for the Ruahine Forest Park area: Takapari Road, which this track meets just before the hut, “is closed to vehicles due to significant damage to the road and vegetation”. This walk starts from Tamaki West Road, so it doesn’t rely on driving that road.

DOC’s track page doesn’t give booking or fee details, so check the hut page on the DOC website before you go.

Getting There and Preparing

The track is at the end of Tamaki West Road, Dannevirke. DOC gives the road end as about a 1 hour, 60 km drive from Palmerston North and about 1 hour 30 minutes, 130 km from Napier.

DOC’s outdoor advice applies here as on any Ruahine tramp: choose a trip that matches your skills, check the weather forecast, pack warm clothes and extra food, and leave your intentions with a trusted contact and take a distress beacon. Plan My Walk is a handy place to pull the forecast and a gear list together.
