The Rangitīkei River runs 241 km from the Kaimanawa Ranges east of Lake Taupō to the Tasman Sea south of Whanganui, and Fish & Game says most of it gives good to excellent trout fishing.
The headwaters hold trophy browns and rainbows in wilderness reached by helicopter, but Palmerston North anglers mostly fish the middle and lower river, from Mangaweka and Vinegar Hill down to Bulls. Those reaches are open all year, with fly, spinner and bait allowed and many access points off SH1.

What to Expect
Fish & Game describes the Rangitīkei as one of the country’s premier trout fisheries in its uppermost reaches, prized for a large population of trophy browns and rainbows, reached by helicopter or a long walk in through Kaimanawa Forest Park.
Below that, the upper and middle river runs through dramatic, scenic gorge country, and the lower river loses some character as it grows but still has good fishing at many easy access points.
Rainbow trout movement shapes the fishing. Mature rainbows typically move upstream in late autumn and early winter, leaving plenty of one and two-year-old fish that are ideal for winter fishing. Browns are spread more evenly through the river, though the big ones are harder to find in winter.
At Vinegar Hill, about 6 km north of Hunterville, a large picnic area beside the river has several tracks down to the water and is a popular place to camp, picnic and barbecue.
How to Fish the Rangitīkei River
Where and when
The middle and lower reaches fish all year. In winter, target the young rainbows left behind after the big fish move upstream. When fly fishing with a wet fly or nymph, the key is getting the fly down to the depth the fish are feeding at. After rain the river can carry colour, which suits spinning in the middle reaches.
What to catch and what to use
- Spinning: very popular here, with Veltics, Dandy’s, Rapalas and Z spinners.
- Fly: wet flies and nymphs fished at the trout’s feeding depth.
- Bait: allowed below the designated upper water.
- Sea-run trout: found in the estuary near Tangimoana.
Getting There and Facilities
- Mangarere Road: off SH1 just south of Mangaweka, 1.2 km to the bridge, with a track down to the river. Parking is limited, so pull well off the road.
- Vinegar Hill: about 6 km north of Hunterville, turn east onto Vinegar Hill Road and cross the bridge to the large picnic area, with tracks to the river and room to camp.
- Kākāriki Road bridge: from Halcombe, 4.5 km along Halcombe Road then right onto Kākāriki Road; access at both ends of the bridge.
- Bulls: on the true left, a gravel track off Tangimoana Road leads under the SH1 bridge; on the true right, Bridge Street runs past a small park to the river.

- Riverbed rules: no dogs, fires or vehicles on the riverbed at Fish & Game access points, and leave gates as you find them. Above the Kawhatau confluence, landowner permission is generally needed.

- Between the Ohinewaione confluence and Matawhero Road Bridge, the standard 1 October to 30 April season applies.
- Above the Ohinewaione confluence is the Upper Rangitīkei designated water: fly and spinner only, 1 October to 30 April, with a designated waters licence on top of a season licence and a maximum size rule.
- Check the current Wellington regulations for limits before you keep a fish.
- The river can rise fast and is powerful. Check the Horizons flow at Mangaweka and do not wade or cross when it is up.
