Colyton near Palmerston North: Village Guide to Hall, School and Farm Life

Last updated October 2026

Colyton is a small farming village in the Manawatū District, north-east of Feilding and a short drive from Palmerston North. It is not part of Palmerston North city. Houses and farms sit along Taonui Road and Colyton Road, with no town centre of their own.

Daily life turns on the school, the community hall and a volunteer committee. The name comes from Colyton in Devon, the English parish linked with many early settler families. Come for a quiet rural community, not for shops or a main street.

About Colyton

Colyton is open farming country on the Manawatū plains, in the Manawatu Rural General Ward and also in Ngā Tapuae o Matangi Māori Ward. Postal addresses use Feilding and the postcode 4775. Properties are spread along the roads rather than gathered around a square, and the nearest full range of shops and services is in Feilding.

The settlement takes its name from Colyton in Devon, England. A local history note recorded on Papers Past, and summarised by Wikipedia, says many early settler families in the district came from that parish. The spelling has stayed with the New Zealand community ever since.

Two public buildings still mark the place. Colyton School opened in 1884 as a state primary for farm families. Colyton Hall followed in 1890 on Taonui Road. Both remain the social centre of the village, even though the hall standing today is a rebuild.

Manawatū District Council treats Colyton as a village and works with a community committee brought back by local volunteers in 2023. The committee’s plan, shaped in a local workshop, uses three themes: safe, connected and growth.

Ideas raised with the council included roading, digital connectivity, planting, walkways and care for local iwi and pioneer heritage. The council article does not name a single iwi, so this guide does not either.

There is no village shopping strip. Groceries and most services are in Feilding, with Palmerston North covering the wider city range. What Colyton offers instead is a hireable hall, a full primary school, a playground kept up by locals, and the small shared projects that hold a rural community together.

History and Heritage

Colyton School is the older institution. It opened in 1884 and is still a co-educational state school for Years 1 to 8, at 421 Colyton Road.

The school community includes families from Colyton and from Feilding, and it uses the rural setting for environmental education. A 75th jubilee booklet from 1959 shows how long the school has been a focus for reunions and local memory.

The first Colyton Hall was built in 1890 at 548 Taonui Road. Fire damaged that building, and the hall was rebuilt in 1995. The new rooms are modern, but the site keeps its old role as the place for meetings, suppers and community notices. A rifle club building is joined to the hall by a covered hallway.

Community Facilities

Manawatū District Council lists the hall floor area as 384 square metres, with room for up to 200 people. The venue has a main hall with stage, foyer, meeting room, supper room, kitchen, toilets and three storage rooms. Disabled access is available. Parking is a sealed off-road area at the front and an unsealed area at the side.

Hire is arranged locally, not through a council counter. The council hall page lists Brian Hills on (06) 328 7823 or 027 484 5253, and Bruce MacMillan on (06) 328 7832. Check those contacts before you plan a function, as volunteer details can change.

The community playground is the other regular meeting point. Volunteers, with help from the local Lions club and timber from Feilding ITM, rebuilt a fort first made in 1986.

Council parks staff organised a new swing, and locals have run a sharing shelf for donated goods such as vegetable plants and books. These are volunteer efforts, so what is on site can change from one visit to the next.

Getting Around

Colyton is a place you drive to. Taonui Road and Colyton Road link the hall and the school with Feilding, about 10 kilometres to the south-west. From Palmerston North, the usual approach is through or past Feilding onto those rural roads.

Council sources do not list a scheduled bus into the village. Some families use school transport; ask Colyton School for current arrangements rather than assuming a public route.

Feilding is the practical base for fuel, groceries and most appointments. Palmerston North is close enough for a city day out, but it is a separate council area. Roads here are ordinary rural sealed roads, so allow a little extra time in wet weather and watch for farm traffic.
