Beautiful Waterfalls throughout the Palmerston North region
Waterfalls within day-trip reach of Palmerston North sit in the Pohangina Valley north of the city, the Tararua Range to the south (including tracks accessed from Holdsworth Lodge and the upper Mangahao), and the eastern Ruahine Range and Te Apiti / Manawatū Gorge area. Most are short walks from a road-end or part of a longer DOC track; some are seasonal (best after rain) or require crossing private farmland with permission.
Standard NZ track safety applies: check DOC for closures, be alert for changing weather in the ranges, and avoid rivers in heavy rain. None of the major falls require a great deal of fitness; the longest typical approach is 60 to 90 minutes one way. The waterfalls below cover the region’s viewing and short-walk options.
