Palmerston North Tides and Times

Palmerston North's Ultimate Tide Guide

Tides for Palmerston North are relevant at the coastal beaches west of the city: Foxton Beach, Himatangi Beach and the lower Manawatū River mouth area, all roughly 40 minutes drive west. Palmerston North itself is inland, so tide information here applies to the wider Manawatū coast where the city’s residents go for beach swimming, fishing, surfcasting, shellfish gathering and boating. The widget below shows live tide times for the area.

Why Tides Matter

Local activities tied closely to the tide cycle include:

  • Surfcasting for snapper, kahawai and gurnard, best at dawn and dusk on the incoming tide
  • Swimming at Foxton and Himatangi (lifeguard-patrolled in summer); rip currents change with the tide cycle
  • Shellfish gathering on the wider coast at low tide
  • Boating and kayaking at the river mouths, where the tidal range affects launch ramps and bar crossings
  • Beach walking at low tide when the sand flats expand

Tide Range and Pattern

The Manawatū coast experiences a semi-diurnal tide pattern (two highs and two lows per day, ~12.5 hours apart). Typical tidal range is around 1.5 to 2 metres; spring tides (around full and new moon) can reach 2.5 metres or more.

Safety

Standard NZ coastal safety applies: check the marine forecast before launching boats, swim between the flags when lifeguards are on duty, watch children around tidal rip currents (particularly at the river mouths), and time shellfish gathering for the bottom of low tide. Sea conditions on the lower Manawatū coast can build quickly with westerly weather.
